"So, whether you live around the block or around the world; it's going to be an exciting crowd-pleasing event with many hard-fought matches before a captive-festival audience." Camp, added. The NYC Big Apple Grapple has been hosted by Madison Square Garden, Javits Center, the Empire State Building Observatory, Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum and (before 9/11) the World Trade Center Observatory.

"We are excited that White Castle is sponsoring some of the world's strongest athletes at the Columbus Ave. Festival to showcase their talents in the sport of arm wrestling," said, White Castle New York Regional Director John Vogt. We look forward to another very successful event." White Castle was founded in 1921 in Wichita, Kansas. World's Mightiest Pro Arm Wrestlers Match Grips at
'NYC BIG APPLE GRAPPLE® XXVI'

Yerby is NYC Queen of Arms for 4th time - Pajishvilli is new King - Darling is 4 time Master Champion - Best-With-Both-Arms is Gelashvili from Rego Park Light Weight & Selearis from Elmhurst Heavy Weight both win Arm-Star Awards - Selearis Crowned 'NYC Arm Wrestler of the Year' Republic of Georgia wins team championship

Manhattan, NY. March 22, 2003. -- The start of war in Iraq couldn't keep the world's best pro arm wrestlers from their own battle scene in NYC aboard the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum, the converted battleship, for the 26th NYC BIG APPLE GRAPPLE® held on March 22nd, as some US titleholders relinquished their crowns to international stars, including two powerhouses from Republic of Georgia - the unrelenting 225 lb. Heavyweight Mamuka Pajishvili , now living in Brooklyn, who captured the 'NYC King of Arms' crown; and Georgi Gelasvili, another Georgian living in Rego Park, Queens NY, who quelled every right- and left-handed threat among the Middleweights, for the "NYC Arm-Star Award,' signifying mastery from both sides. But their wins didn't come easily; long-time champs such as Harry Wilson of Brooklyn - bumped up from his usual lightweight class by a couple of pounds - and Chris Myers of Whitestone, Queens NY, were both crafty and fierce in their contests. With the help of a third Georgian, the Team Championship went to those transplanted Georgians in New York, who were trained in the Euro-Asian tradition of arm wrestling as an organized, professional cash sport, and entrants from the NYC borough of Queens showed well in second place. Yet a few other international stars, from Brazil, Korea, Turkey, and Morocco dropped out due to the war and travel hurdles they faced.

In the end, the U.S. retained bragging rights for its repeat title wins in several other weight classes, though some had no international challengers: Cynthia Yerby of Wolf, Oklahoma, a seven-time world champion, took her 4th 'NYC Queen of Arms' title, defeating Empire State Champion Dina Fortuna from Wading River, NY and Connecticut State champion Cindy Loonay from Milford, Ct. The Super-Heavyweight Open went to Paul Walter of Cresskill, NJ. The 2002 NYC Sit-Down King of Arms champion bested Dirk Schenker from Wolfsburg, Germany who had a strong run but succumbed from a wrist injury. Mike Selearis of Elmhurst in Queens, NY, was the Light-Heavyweight winner and the left-arm winner against the heavier Pajishvilli, and was crowned with the NYC Arm-Star Award and "NYC Arm Wrestler of the Year" for his consistent showing and his overall performance in the last twelve months. In the Lightweight class, Dan 'Blue Thunder' White of Staten Island, NY, dominated the lightweight class. 15-year old Amanda Fortuna from Wading River, LI, NY was the Women's Middleweight Champion. She is part of the Fortuna arm wrestling family (dad Dan was of the four referees today, except for his family's matches). In the lightest women's class, Susan Fisher of Fairhills, PA, ruled. The four time Master's Champion Ray Darling of Cropseyville, NY, kept his title (age 45+) once again and came in second to Gelashvili as a Middleweight. Last year's NYC King of Arms Jason Vale was a NO SHOW.

Today's event was termed "the Oscar of Arm Wrestling" by Yerby, and Gene Camp of the New York Arm Wrestling Association, which manages the top metro-area events for amateurs, pros and teens year-round, called this BIG APPLE GRAPPLE® "The best tournament in many years, with matches by unrelenting competitors who came here for the glory of winning in NYC, even without the cash prizes like those offered through sponsored international events. I see this inevitably becoming an Olympic sport," Camp added. Sponsors of today's championship were Nutro Natural Choice Dog & Cat Foods and Goodyear Jamaica Tire & Auto Service Center. Upcoming NYAWA events this Spring and Summer are planned for amateurs and youth, as shown on the website NewYorkArmWrestling.com. # (See Official Results)

Long Island, NY. November 18, 2002 - THE LONG ISLAND SIT-DOWN KING OF ARMS CHAMPION will be crowned on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 in an arm wrestling event for Pros and amateurs at McLoon's - located at 12 South Park Avenue, Rockville Centre, Long Island, NY. Weigh in and registration begins at 5 PM and start time is 7 PM. There are three weight classes each for amateurs and pros and one open class for all women. $500 in first place Cash Prizes with 30-pound statue awards plus medals will be given for first, second and third place. Spectator admission is free while a $15 entry fee for contestants will be donated to The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Pediatric Cancer Research Fund. Walk-in contestants are allowed and there are no residency restrictions, but anyone under 18 years old needs a parent or guardian consent signature. The proud sponsor is The National Collision Co. USA, Inc.

Top arm wrestling qualifiers invited from earlier tournaments in NYC, and newer amateurs, especially those from the Long Island union trades and professions, will face off in the "Long Island Tournament of Trades." The men and women will hold a series of refereed matches in their respective weight classes in the traditional sitting position, which eliminates contestants' ability to use body positioning as leverage and discounts any acquired technique. According to Annette Colantropo, VP of the New York Arm Wrestling Association (NYAWA), which will produce the event, "Decisive wins based on pure force and muscle-power make these sit-down matches fast-paced and exciting, plus even a raw beginner can steal the show and the title."

In addition to the amateur bouts, the Pros will hold their own matches (Pros being former title winners) for cash prizes of $100, followed by a final challenge between the top Pro and top amateur winners of the night for the ultimate "LI Sit-Down King of Arms" title and a $200 cash bonus. To seize the women's title, competitors will have to out-wrestle the featured Dina Fortuna, the 2002 Empire State Champion. The arm-wrestling Fortuna family of Wading River includes Dina's husband Dan and teenage daughter Amanda, who will also be competing.

The National Collision Co, USA Inc., owned by Baldwin businessman Bobby Buttafuoco, is sponsoring the tournament. Buttafuoco also happens to be the 13-time winner from 1987 to 2000 of the NYC King of Arms title, making him one of the all-time greats of arm wrestling, sitting or standing. He will also be the awards presenter and referee some of the matches at McLoon's.

The NYAWA has announced its next event on March 22nd at the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum: "The NYC BIG APPLE GRAPPLE® XXVI," the NY metro area's most prestigious professional event, which attracts world-class caliber competitors and features NYC's King and Queen of Arms.

SEAN RINGGOLD AND DINA FORTUNA
COWNED WITH EMPIRE STATE'S STRONGEST ARMS
QUEENS WINS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP IN LANDSLIDE

ATTENTION: SPORTS & LOCAL NEWS EDITORS PHOTOS, On Request

Manhattan, NY. October 10, 2002 - Sean Ringgold from Rockaway, Queens is 6' 5" and weighs in at 280 pounds was billed today as The "Rockaway Flash" for his uncanny ability to 'flash pin' (win in a second) against all comers in both the Right and Left hand Super Heavy Weight Empire State Championships today. This is NYC's oldest and most prestigious amateur contest of its kind. The Empire State 'Golden Arm' Tournament of Champions XXV was held at the Empire State Building Observatory's sky lobby on October 10, 2002 marking a 25th Anniversary Championship. Major World Used Car Superstore was the proud sponsor of today's Empire State Finals.

Ringgold put on an impressive display of brute strength in the deciding matches where technique, most time carries more weight. The employee of BET (Black Entertainment Television) was further crowned with the "Arm-Star Award" for winning with both arms; then he took on all first place winners and captured the days Strongest Man - MVP Award. Earlier this summer, Ringgold qualified for today's event because he entered and won the 'Queensboro' Championship, which is one of the 10 preliminary events held for men and women in each of the five NYC boroughs, LI and Upstate New York as part of the New York 'Golden Arm' Series, sponsored by the New York Arm Wrestling Association (NYAWA).

At the finals Ringgold was challenged as a leftie by second place finisher Edwin Safarian of Bayside, a Hunter College student and last year's 200 pounds and under Empire State Champion and Dan Fortuna of the "Amazing Fortuna Arm-Wrestling Family" from Wading River, LI. took third. (Fortuna's wife Dina and daughter Amanda were also medal winners today.) In the right-handed Super Heavy Championship it was Eric Russell of Wappinger Falls, NY, taking second place and Krysztof Perka of Ridgewood, Queens, who took third to Ringgold.

In the 200 lb. heavyweight class, Dan Sorrese of West Islip, LI, a multi-borough champion of the preliminary tournaments and former MVP overcame Safarian today, who ended in second place once again, with Greg Gavin of West Islip, LI, in third. Gavin, a favorite who was expected to win, fell short today in his matches. But in acknowledgment of his all-around competitive finesse in events throughout the year, he was awarded with the NYAWA's NYC "Arm Wrestler of the Year" award.

EMPIRE STATE'S STRONGEST ARMS

In the 175 lb. middleweight class, Patrick Baffa of Whitestone, Queens, a nine-time borough champion, bested Tony Kaiser of Plainfield, CT, a top competitor who took second, and Harry Wilson of Brooklyn was third. (Wilson is a seventeen time Borough Champion and was last year's NYC Arm Wrestler of the Year). Wilson, who often dominated past events in the 150-lb class was edged out by 3-lbs into the 175 pound class today to go up against unfamiliar and bigger men and to take third place. In the 175 lb. left-handed contest, Richard Calero of the Bronx, a personal trainer and Bronx Team captain, was able to beat both Kaiser and Wilson, who again ranked second and third.

In the 150 lb. class, Dan White of Staten Island - named "Blue Thunder" by his admirers - had to struggle but prevailed over James Rought of Laceyville, PA, second place winner, and Steve Zannikus, a Manhattan restaurant owner, who was third. In the lightest 132 lb. class, 16-year old Gabriel Yak, who attends Flushing High School in Queens, made fast work of the field, leaving Chris Sciarappa of Seymour CT in second place and Floyd Ryder of Bristol CT in third. Yak was the NYAWA's NYC Junior Arm Wrestling Champion this year. The NYC Junior Team Champions from Newtown High School in Queens also competed, but went home disappointed without anyone winning a medal today.

Dina Fortuna, who with her family is building an arm wrestling dynasty, was named the female MVP today, after defeating Carrie Wilson of Milford CT (second place) and Kim Dykstra of Brooklyn (third) in the open weight class. Then Fortuna went on to beat Christine Scheurich, a one time 11 years in a row NYC Champion and long-time dominating presence, which had only competed twice in the passed two years. Sheurich was off her best form but still prevailed in the lighter 135 lb women's class against Dina's daughter Amanda, another arm wrestling star who won seven championships in the last two years. Amanda had to settle for (second place) and Melanie Ovalles of the Bronx (third place.)

In the Masters Men's Class (age 45 and over), NYC Parks Department employee Michael Degraffenreid of Ozone Park, Queens, defeated Bob Spieler of Brooklyn and Augustin Gonzalez of the Bronx, who were second and third place winners. Gonzalez, at age 75 was Masters Class Queens Borough Champion this year by outlasting younger men in the 60+age category.

Queens won the Team Award title again in a landslide, when points for each of the individual contest winners were tallied by place of residence. Long Island came in second and the Bronx third. For all titles, a 3-inch Olympic style medal was awarded, and plaques were given for the special honors. Major World's President, Bruce Bendell was delayed in traffic and couldn't present the awards as planned. Gene Camp, founder and president of the 25-year old NYAWA, described today's Finals as "One of the best events ever and displaying the flash and individualism of very diverse competitors who are always surprising us with major upsets."

The NYAWA will hold the NYC BIG APPLE GRAPPLE® XXVI ALL PRO Championships on Saturday, March 22, 2003, at the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum. MIGHTY MUSCLES GRIP FESTIVAL AS
MEN & WOMEN STRONG-ARM THEIR WAY INTO FINALS
Columbus Avenue Festival to host the 22nd Annual ‘Manhattanboro’

MANHATTAN, NY. Sept. 12, 2000. The Columbus Avenue Festival will be full of the mightiest of muscles from the tri-state area and beyond. The gathering is for Manhattan's last qualifying event of the New York 'Golden Arm' Series.

The Westside Chamber of Commerce, City of New York Parks and Recreation and New York Arm Wrestling Association will join forces to present the Manhattan Borough Arm Wrestling Championship on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000 on the Main Stage at the corner of 86th Street and Columbus Ave. Registration and weigh-in will begin at 11am and start time is 2pm. Contestant entry is $10 for members $15 for non-members on our mailing list.

Special custom Arm Wrestling awards and certificates will be given for first, second and third place in each of nine weight classes for men including a 45+ masters class and three classes for women. All award winners will qualify for the ALL AMATEUR Empire State NY 'Golden Arm' Tournament of Champions. This final event will be held at the Port Authority Bus Terminal on October 12, 2000.

"The Columbus Avenue Championship is the most competitive of all the preliminaries" said; Gene Camp, founder and president of the 23 year old NYAWA. "It seems everyone waits for the last event of the series, to qualify for the finals. Even 'out of towners' compete, since there are no residency requirements."

The series, now in it's seventh season, consist of eight preliminary championships and the finals. Events are held at festivals, race tracks, beaches and major tourist attractions in each of the five NYC boroughs, Long Island and upstate New York.

According to Camp, The New York 'Golden Arm' Series has changed its status this year. The 2000 series was changed from a Pro-Am to an all amateur series. It was voted upon and decided by the NYAWA Borough directors, that amateurs had only a remote chance of winning against professional, veteran pros.
